The Innovative Youth in Agriculture (I-Youth) project paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency Mallam Umar Namadi, the Governor of Jigawa State, Nigeria, as part of efforts to expand the project’s activities to the state. This visit underlines the project’s commitment to promoting access to dignified and fulfilling work for youths in Jigawa State by empowering young people with the skills and resources to participate actively in the agricultural sector.
The government’s support is crucial to successfully implement the project’s objectives in Jigawa, as it can facilitate the mobilization of local resources and stakeholders.
During the visit, Project Executive Manager Aline Mugisho reviewed IITA’s initiatives addressing unemployment and food security by engaging youth in modern and profitable agribusiness. She highlighted the project’s goal of improving Jigawa’s agricultural sector and enhancing its economic viability by equipping youth with the necessary skills and competencies.
Mugisho said, “To develop the sector, we need the commitment of political leaders, resources, investment, and the strength of the youth. We propose making Jigawa State a center of excellence in agriculture and building an industry that can employ the growing youth population. Let’s join hands, do it right, and do it together.”
Governor Namadi expressed delight at the visit and acknowledged IITA’s contributions to helping farmers, women, and youth. He said, “As leaders, we must keep the youth engaged. Otherwise, the story will be different. The more we develop the agricultural value chain, the more we will encourage our youth to participate in agribusiness, reduce unemployment, and boost our economy.”
Governor Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to agriculture and youth empowerment, mentioning the state’s efforts through cluster farming, extension services, and value chain development.
“You are in the right place at the right time, and we will give you all the support you need to operationalize this initiative,” he said.
The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to implement the I-Youth project in Jigawa State.
